Answer:
People respond differently to weight training. There are many different factors that can affect your progress. Diet is of paramount importance - if you aren't getting the right nutrients at the right time your body won't grow. Body type is also a major factor. Ectomorphs (slim frame, rapid metabolism) have a much harder time gaining lean mass than Mesomorphs (stocky build, moderate metabolism) who grow muscle easily, but also gain fat fairly easily. Endomorphs (slow metabolism) gain fat very easily - they tend to have pear shaped physiques. With all else being equal, you are likely to be an ectomorph, whereas your friend sounds like he is a mesomorph. It is possible to be a combination of body types, however ectomorphs require specialized programs to be really successful in the gym. I suggest you look for a training program that is geared to your body type.
compare what you eat...the difference there is probably considerable.
everybodys body processes foods at differant rates. are you both eating identical meals at all times? if not then that most likely is part of it.your carb intakes probaly differ alot and your protien intakes differ also.Look into your ''diets''
If you are both healthy then the answer lies in your diet. How many calories you consume (food) and how many calories you burn (exercise) will determine if you gain or loose weight. Your buddy gets more calories in through food than what he burns though exercise, which explains his extra bulk. You on the other hand have lost weight because you burn more calories than you consume. Since you now have less body fat, you display more toned muscles. My advise is to modify your diet.
Your burning more calories than it takes to maintain your weight, hence your lowering body fat around your muscles getting a more toned look. He is eating more than what it takes to maintain his weight, hence the extra calories are used to build bigger muscles.

DIET, DIET, DIET!
